When it comes to wedding venues in Western New York, sometimes the most meaningful location is right at home. Geeta and Eric’s gorgeous summer wedding was a masterclass in how to transform a private residence into an elegant, dynamic event space. Their day seamlessly blended the vibrant, deeply rooted traditions of an Indian celebration with a contemporary, high-energy reception right in the comfort of their own backyard.
Getting Ready: An Editorial Eye for Accessories
An Indian fusion wedding is inherently rich in texture, color, and intricate design, and Geeta and Eric’s morning was no exception. From Geeta’s breathtaking jewelry and intricate mehndi to the vibrant fabrics of their traditional garments, the accessories were absolutely stunning.
Instead of pulling these items away to shoot them in stiff, heavily staged flat-lays, my approach is to document these details as they are actively being worn and interacted with. Capturing the delicate moment a heavy necklace is clasped, or documenting the texture of the garments as they are put on, highlights the true elegance of the pieces. It ensures that the beautiful cultural details are preserved with a high-end, editorial finish, while keeping the gallery firmly rooted in real, honest storytelling.
Documenting the Choora Ceremony & Cultural Traditions
One of the most profound aspects of photographing a fusion wedding is capturing the specific, intimate rituals that bring families together. For Geeta, the morning included the traditional Choora ceremony. Before she put on her wedding bangles, they were blessed and purified in a bowl of milk—a beautiful, tactile moment surrounded by her closest family members.
As a documentary photographer, these are the moments I live for. Because they were in their own home, the family was completely at ease. I was able to blend into the background and capture the raw emotion, the hands-on cultural traditions, and the genuine joy of the morning without ever interrupting the flow of the blessing.
From a Traditional Ceremony to a Contemporary Tent Reception
The flow of Geeta and Eric’s day utilized their property perfectly. They hosted a traditional Indian wedding ceremony out in the open air of the backyard, surrounded by vibrant florals and the natural greenery of the space.
After the ceremony, the evening transitioned beautifully. Guests moved seamlessly from the traditional backyard setting into a massive, elegantly draped tent for a contemporary reception.
The Photographer’s Take: Mastering Dynamic Lighting Environments
From a technical standpoint, a wedding that moves from bright outdoor spaces to a covered tent requires a photographer to adapt quickly to completely different lighting scenarios. During their traditional ceremony, I utilized the natural, directional sunlight to beautifully highlight the rich, saturated colors of their Indian garments. As the evening progressed into the tented reception, the lighting became much softer and more ambient. By anticipating this shift, I was able to maintain a cohesive, true-to-life editorial look across the entire gallery, capturing everything from the bright outdoor vows to the high-energy, contemporary dance floor under the tent’s string lights.
