When couples ask me for a Buffalo engagement session location that offers both high-end architecture and lush, romantic nature, my answer is almost always the same: we need to go to the Delaware Park and AKG campus.
Sarah and Nick’s recent engagement session is the perfect showcase of why this area is a local favorite. Within just a short walk, we were able to achieve two completely different, gorgeous aesthetics without ever having to get in the car. As a documentary photographer, I love shooting in this specific corridor of the city because it allows the couple to just stroll, relax, and focus on each other while I capture the shifting light and genuine moments.
Part 1: Editorial Elegance at the AKG Marble Columns
We started our evening right at the iconic marble columns of the newly renovated Buffalo AKG Art Museum. If you want an upscale, editorial vibe for your photos, this is the spot.
The Photographer’s Take: From a technical perspective, shooting around the AKG columns is an absolute dream. The towering white marble acts as a massive, natural light reflector. It bounces gorgeous, clean, and incredibly soft light directly onto the couple, creating flawless skin tones and a timeless, classic aesthetic. Sarah and Nick looked absolutely stunning against the grand architecture, giving the beginning of their session a high-fashion, structured feel.
Part 2: Golden Hour at Hoyt Lake
As the evening progressed, we left the structured marble behind and took the short walk over to Hoyt Lake in the heart of Delaware Park to catch the sunset.
The Photographer’s Take: Timing is everything in photography, and we planned this transition perfectly to hit “golden hour.” There is a very specific magic that happens at Hoyt Lake when the sun begins to set. As the light lowers, it peaks perfectly between the branches of the massive historic trees lining the water. Instead of avoiding that direct sunlight, I love to use it to create warm, cinematic flares and a rich, romantic glow that wraps around the couple. Sarah and Nick’s natural chemistry completely shined here – I simply let them walk along the water’s edge and soak in the perfect Buffalo summer evening.
