A Romantic Knox Farm Engagement Session: Megan & Matt

When couples ask me for an engagement session location that feels expansive, romantic, and completely immersed in nature, Knox Farm State Park in East Aurora is always at the top of my list. Just a short drive from downtown Buffalo, this historic 600-acre estate provides one of the most stunning, diverse backdrops in all of Western New York.

Megan and Matt’s recent engagement session perfectly showcases why Knox Farm is a local favorite. From the towering tree-lined paths to the sprawling open fields of tall grass, it’s a location that naturally encourages couples to just breathe, walk, and be entirely themselves.

Natural Movement and Unscripted Moments
As a documentary photographer, I don’t believe in forcing stiff, awkward poses. My goal is to capture the true, raw connection between two people. Knox Farm is the perfect environment for this true-to-life approach because there is so much room to explore.

Instead of standing in one spot, we spent the evening roaming the estate grounds. By simply letting Megan and Matt interact naturally – walking through the historic areas and running through the open fields – I was able to document their genuine joy and chemistry. The result is a gallery that feels less like a formal photoshoot and more like an authentic, editorial story of their afternoon together.

The Photographer’s Take: Mastering Golden Hour in the Open Fields
From a technical perspective, Knox Farm is an absolute dream for lighting, particularly if you time the session right. Because the fields are so wide open, there are no tall city buildings blocking the sunset.

We planned Megan and Matt’s session to hit the peak of “golden hour.” As the sun dipped lower in the sky, it cast an incredible, warm glow across the tall grass. I love using this directional sunlight to create soft, romantic flares and a rich, golden aesthetic that beautifully highlights the couple. The way the light wrapped around Megan and Matt created an effortless, cinematic look without needing any artificial flash.

Planning Your Own Knox Farm Engagement
Your engagement session should feel like a date night where you just happen to have a professional third wheel capturing the memories. Whether you want the rustic elegance of Knox Farm or an urban, architectural vibe in the city, your photos should reflect exactly who you are.
